Grade: 5 | Math 5
Prerequisite: None
5th-grade math allows students to build on their basic math skills
while providing opportunities for rigor, higher order, and critical
thinking. Topics such as adding, subtracting, multiplying and
dividing, decimals and fractions, data analysis, simplifying
numerical and algebraic expressions, and finding the perimeter,
area, and volume of various polygons supplement daily skills such as
place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of
whole numbers.
Extensions to 5th grade include multiplying and dividing mixed
numbers, dividing decimals by decimals, introduction to algebraic
equations and integers, and ordered pairs in all four quadrants of
the coordinate plane.
Grade: 6 | Math 6
Prerequisite: None
This course will develop and extend procedures for addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division of integers and positive
rational numbers. Students will also develop an understanding of and
learn how to solve ratio and rate problems, create equivalent ratios
that describe situations involving proportionality, solve problems
involving proportional relationships, use expressions and equations
to represent relationships in various contexts and use mathematical
symbols. In addition, students will build on their understanding of
measurement, including area, volume, and triangle properties. Data
analysis and measures of center and variation will be studied.
An extension of 6th grade will include analyzing and solving percent
problems, generating equivalent expressions, and solving problems
using equations and inequalities. Geometry concepts will include
solving problems involving surface area and area and volume of
composite shapes.
Grade: 7 | Math 7
Prerequisite: None
Students will develop fluency with addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division of rational numbers and use operations
to solve problems. They will also use reasoning about ratios, rates,
proportionality, and percent to solve problems, select, justify, and
use appropriate symbolic representations to solve problems in varied
contexts, including the use of geometric formulas for pyramids and
circles.
Grade: 8 | Pre-algebra
Prerequisite: None
Students will cover all TEKS for Grade 8 and a portion of the TEKS
for Algebra 1. Students will develop fluency with rational number
computation, roots, order of operations, ratios & proportions,
expressions, equations, slope, and linear equations. They will also
be able to elect, justify, and use appropriate symbolic
representations to solve problems in varied contexts, including
geometric formulas for pyramids and circles and representations of
center, spread, and shape to compare and form inferences about data
sets. This course serves as preparation for Algebra 1.

Pre-Algebra
Students will build on the knowledge and skills for mathematics in
Grades 6-8, which provide a foundation in linear relationships,
numbers and operations, and proportionality. Students will study
linear, quadratic, and exponential functions and their related
transformations, equations, and associated solutions. Students will
connect functions and their associated solutions in mathematical and
real-world situations. Students will use technology to collect and
explore data and analyze statistical relationships. In addition,
students will study polynomials of degrees one and two, radical
expressions, sequences, and laws of exponents. Students will
generate and solve linear systems with two equations and two
variables and create new functions through transformations.
